CV vs resume: what is the difference, and which one do they want?
What is a CV vs a resume? In the US, a resume is a short summary of your work and skills, usually one page, written for one job. A CV (curriculum vitae) is the full record of an academic or research career, of any length. In the UK, Ireland and much of Europe, "CV" usually just means a resume.

The difference in one table
These are the US meanings. Abroad, the words work differently: see the next section.
| Resume | CV (curriculum vitae) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One page, two with long experience | As long as it needs to be |
| Purpose | Show you fit one job | Record a whole academic or research career |
| Changes per job? | Yes, rewritten for each posting | Mostly no, you add to it over time |
| Usual sections | Contact, experience, education, skills | Those, plus research, publications, presentations, teaching, grants and awards, memberships, references |
| What comes first | Whatever matches the job best | Education, then research and publications |
| Who asks for it | Almost every employer in the US and Canada | Universities, research labs, fellowships, many medical and scientific posts |
The short version: a resume is selective, a CV is complete.
Which one do they want?
Read who is asking and where the job is.
| Your situation | Send | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A US or Canadian job that asks for a resume | A resume | It is what the word means here. |
| A US job outside academia or research that asks for a "CV" | A resume | People use the words loosely. If unsure, ask the recruiter. |
| A faculty, postdoc, research or fellowship position, or graduate school | A CV | They want your publications, teaching and research in full. |
| A medical or scientific research job | Usually a CV | Check the posting. It normally says. |
| A US federal job on USAJOBS | A resume of two pages at most | Since September 27, 2025, you must choose a resume of two pages or less to apply. |
| A job in the UK or Ireland | A "CV", which is a resume | There, CV is the standard name for any job application document. |
| A job elsewhere in Europe, or in India or South Africa | Usually a resume-length CV | The words are often used interchangeably. Check the posting or ask. |
| A job in Australia or New Zealand | A resume or a CV, they mean the same | Both words are used. "Resume" is more common in the private sector, "CV" for academic, government and medical roles. |
Abroad, the word changes but the idea does not: a short document, written for the job. Local habits about photos and personal details differ by country, so look at a few local job sites before you send one.
Turning a CV into a resume
This is the move most people need: an academic leaving research, or a graduate student applying to industry.
- Open the job posting and mark what it asks for: tools, tasks, qualifications.
- Keep your contact details and education, one or two lines per degree. Drop the thesis abstract unless the job is about that subject.
- Turn research and teaching into experience entries, two or three lines each, written for someone outside your field.
- Replace the full publication list with one line, or leave it off.
- Leave out references, conference lists and memberships unless the posting asks for them.
- Add a short skills line in the posting's words.
- Cut until it fits one page, or two if you have ten or more years of relevant experience. See how long a resume should be.
Here is the same work, written both ways:
Turning a resume into a CV
Going the other way, for graduate school or a research job, you add rather than cut.
- Move education to the top. Add your thesis or dissertation title and your advisor.
- Add sections as you have them: research experience, publications, presentations, teaching, grants and awards, service, professional memberships.
- Write publications as full citations, in the style your field uses.
- Keep everything relevant to your academic work. There is no page limit, but there is no padding either.
- End with references, with names, titles and contact details: CVs often include them, unlike resumes.

Questions
Is a CV the same as a resume?
In the US and Canada, no: a CV is a long academic record and a resume is a short summary for one job. In the UK and Ireland, "CV" is simply the word for the document you send with any job application, and in much of Europe the two words are used interchangeably.
What does CV stand for?
Curriculum vitae, Latin for "course of life". The name fits the US meaning: a CV records your whole academic life, not just what fits one job.
Can I send a resume when a US job asks for a CV?
If the job is outside universities, research and medicine, yes: the employer almost always means a resume. If you are not sure, ask the recruiter which one they want. It takes one line and saves you guessing.
How long is a CV?
As long as your record. A graduate student's CV may be two or three pages, and a senior researcher's can run into double digits.
Should a student send a CV or a resume for an internship?
A resume, unless it is a research position that asks for a CV. Keep it to one page.
