Target hiring age: how old do you have to be to work at Target?
Target does not publish one minimum hiring age. Some of its store job descriptions, such as Inbound Expert, say "Must be at least 18 years of age or older", while others, including Guest Advocate (cashier), list no age at all. Check the posting for the role you want, and your state's rules if you are under 18.

What Target's own pages say about age
Target has no careers page that states a single hiring age, and its careers FAQ does not mention age. Its store job descriptions do differ. On October 2, 2026:
| Target role | What it does | Age on Target's description |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound Expert | Sorts and stocks merchandise; climbs ladders, operates powered equipment when certified | "Must be at least 18 years of age or older" |
| Guest Advocate | Guest service, checkout, scanning and bagging | None listed |
| Front of Store Attendant | Front of store work: scanners, moving merchandise up to 44 pounds | None listed |
So the answer depends on the role. Job boards report different ages for Target, which is why the posting is the thing to go by.
How to check the age for a Target job
- Go to corporate.target.com/careers and search for store jobs near you.
- Open the posting and read the requirements list. An age requirement, when there is one, is listed there.
- If no age is listed and you are under 18, ask the store before you apply.
Does Target hire at 16?
Target does not publish a rule for 16. At 16, federal law allows any number of hours in any job not declared hazardous, but nobody under 18 may drive for work, run balers and compactors, or use other hazardous equipment. The role we found marked "18 or older", Inbound Expert, includes ladders and powered equipment. Your state may also limit school-night hours; check it on the Department of Labor's state table.
Does Target hire at 14 or 15?
Target does not say it does. At 14 and 15, federal law limits you to 3 hours on a school day and 18 in a school week, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (9 p.m. in summer), with no ladders and no power-driven machinery. See who does say they hire at your age: 14 year olds, 15 year olds.
Which roles to look for
Target lists these store hourly areas, among others: Guest Advocate, Front of Store Attendant, General Merchandise Expert, Fulfillment Expert, Food and Beverage Expert, Starbucks Barista, Style Consultant, Closing Team Member, and On-Demand Team Member for short, flexible shifts. The Starbucks counter inside a Target is a Target job, so you apply through Target.
Do you need a resume?
Target's careers FAQ says: "A resume or CV is not required to apply for jobs but highly encouraged." That makes it worth the few minutes. A one page resume with your school, availability and anything that shows you are reliable shows the store you came prepared.
How to apply
- Apply online through Target's careers site. You can apply for more than one job.
- You may get a phone screen, an interview or a recorded video interview. Target's own tip: practice talking about your experiences, and times you took action to get a result. A group project, a team sport or babysitting all count.
- Offers depend on a background check, and some jobs require a drug screen.
What to bring
- Your availability, written down: Target's descriptions ask for a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- A one page resume.
- A work permit, if you are under 18 and your state requires one.
- After you are hired, ID for Form I-9. Under 18 with no photo ID, a school record or report card can count as your identity document, together with a document such as a Social Security card or birth certificate.
Your first resume
Target encourages a resume, and you do not need work history to write one. Put school first, then volunteering, clubs, sports and any babysitting or odd jobs, each with one line about what you did. You can build it here, step by step on your phone.
